Truth teller is perhaps the kindest name that the industry would think to call the actress, whose strong will has often butted against Hollywood's tender backside. She was outspoken in her early plush years, when potent turns in Urban Cowboy, An Officer and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment made her the movies' most promising -- and delivering -- young actress. She wore her wild streak in public: sex, drugs, locking horns with directors and co-stars. She turned down meaty roles in several popular films (including Broadcast News) and walked off another (A League of Their Own). Her star waned...

People have made a big fuss over the episode when Hopkins cries. This moving scene involves Lewis letting down his old boy guard to share a wrenching yet tender moment with Joy's son, Douglas (Joseph Mazzello). Hopkins delights as the naive and slightly ingenuous children's author. But Winger seems to do more of the work. And as Joy Gresham she has her work cut out for her. Her character is almost as stereotypical as Lewis' initial analysis makes her sound. She's brash, loud-mouthed, has feminist and other leftist leanings and simply will never be anything...

Two days later in Italy, an even older woman, Rossana Dalla Corte, 63, announced that she too would give birth to a ) baby in June. Both women had pursued their pregnancies for the most tender of reasons. Dalla Corte and her 65-year-old husband lost their only child, then 18, in a motorcycle accident three years ago. Jennifer F., as the British press dubbed her, a successful businesswoman and a millionaire, decided belatedly that she had missed the fulfillment of having a child. By slipping...

...denied that his new songs were at least in part inspired by the relationship. Looking for personal clues in Browne's songs is no more useful than trying to map the depth of Scott Fitzgerald by counting the bottles it took to finish Tender Is the Night. But it may be no coincidence that one of Browne's songs got its title from that book. For both novelist and songwriter share a knowledge of the constraints of the spirit and the strain of love gone wild and wrong. Hurt may heal, but as Browne sings in All Good Things, even...

...victories, always at the same plot points.) The movie should have been a triumph, but somehow it falls short. Not because of the performances, which are fine. Culkin appears a little too camera-wise performing among relative amateurs, but he is an effective prince. Kistler dances with the tender grace of a fairy princess. Kyra Nichols leaps through the role of Dewdrop like a cavorting sprite. In the Marzipan Shepherdess's exacting solo -- full of exposed pointe work -- Margaret Tracey looks like a particularly toothsome sweet and dances impeccably...
