...debit side, the film's construction depends overmuch on cross-cutting between Bobby and scenes of Byron Orlock, an aging actor determined to retire, beautifully played by Boris Karloff. We learn early that there is going to be a confrontation of the two at a drive-in, and tend to want to get it over with once the set-up has been established. To some extent, this is suspense generated slickly by Bogdanovich, but mostly it's irritation at having to wade through tentative cross-cutting toward a climax...
...least part of Mansholt's program, particularly the assault on some surpluses, is likely to be adopted in one form or another fairly soon. The deeper structural reforms will have tougher going, especially in West Germany, where farmers tend to be more backward and conservative than anywhere else in the Common Market. Meanwhile, the plan received a major boost last week, when eleven of 13 Common Market commissioners voted to approve it. Though potent farm groups and individual governments have yet to be persuaded, many European officials were agreeing, at least in private, with what Mansholt was saying aloud...
When Brecht's own Berliner Ensemble performs the play, the discipline and virtuosity of the company turn a somewhat silly drama into a comic nightmare. European experience underlines every speech with blood. But Americans tend to regard gangsters with nostalgic indulgence as individualistic resistance fighters against society (witness the vast popularity of Bonnie and Clyde). In the U.S., the play takes on the eerie quality of a faintly sinister success story, in which an immigrant boy from Brooklyn overcomes his bad accent and deplorable manners to achieve dominion and power over the second largest city in the nation...
...many young Cochinese have emigrated to Israel. Another is that the colony is divided by an internecine feud between "white Jews," who are descendants of traders, and "black Jews," who the "whites" say are the descendants of converted slaves. The white Jews, whose ancestors came from Europe and Baghdad, tend to be fair-skinned, while the black Jews are darker-complexioned. White families will not allow their daughters to marry into black families. Today, few Cochin Jews believe their community can last more than several decades. "This is our last blaze of light before we vanish," said one male leader...
...Though the NDC espouses the philosophy of participatory politics, it is hardly operating at the present time on the widespread base that it claims. All organizations tend to become elitist once leaders arise, as they did in 1968 in the left-liberal community. It is almost inevitable that these leaders who work continuously on day-to-day implementation of the programs will impose, either inadverently or not, their own views of future policy. Thus participatory politics can easily become a euphemism for the old decision-making process...
