These people must bear Old Testament burdens, punished not just by life but by the suspicion that they somehow deserve all the troubles heaped upon them. In The Mourners, a sick old man faces eviction from his fifth-floor tenement room. He sits huddled on his floor: "How, in so short a life, could a man do so much wrong?" Advancing years do not bring with them the comforts and support of progeny; there are enough ungrateful daughters here to stock several road companies of King Lear, and sons are equally unfeeling...

Angelo lives with his brawling family in a New York tenement, but he spends most of his time, day and night, out on the streets. Whether peddling wilted flowers in a local restaurant or just fast-talking a pretty girl, Angelo is a born hustler who has a fleet foot in each of two worlds-the gypsy and the Anglo-and who has no time to be a child. There is a plot here-Angelo and Brother Michael trail another gypsy, a garrulous, carbuncular drunk named Steve, to recover the family ring-but this is mainly a device to give...

"They just couldn't wait to get home before shooting up," he tells Snowdrop. She smiles back, still glowing...

...themes of privation and sardonic defiance are conveyed at first glance. The set, designed by Playwright Byrne, is the slab room, dingy as a tenement, yet spattered with paint as cheerfully as a Jackson Pollock canvas. The only ornament is a poster of the slab boys' hero, the rebel without a cause, James Dean. Standing beneath it, a young man studiously paints a watch onto his wrist. He soon makes plain what the audience guesses: in this knockabout environment, even a watch is an unattainable badge of advancement...
