Like many workers of his generation, Fraser has been a union man all his life. Born in a Glasgow, Scotland, tenement, he immigrated to the U.S. when he was six and later, like his father, went to work in a Detroit automobile plant. During the strong union years, Fraser helped win extensive benefits for his members. He won early-retirement pay for auto-workers in 1964 and safety and dental-care programs in 1973. Says a senior auto company official: "Fraser is a very bright, shrewd guy with a pretty good feel for his constituency...
...also to have made the trip to New York, died in Turkey as the clan was about to embark. This leaves the eldest son in the uneasy role of head of a reunited family that broods and sulks and squabbles even as it breathes the ennobling air of tenement America. His balky siblings gravely crimp this Broadway Joe's ambitions, sexual, social and financial. Has he not promised his father to keep the family together? ...Aching Heart, the stage is neither abstractly bare and flexible nor ornately realistic in an attempt at complete geographical and temporal illusion. Instead, Alfred and his designers lovingly construct elements and vignettes. A trolley glides and creaks between disconcertingly realistic rails and wires--under a tastefully schematic tenement-surrounded lot whose metal underpinnings glow coppery in the retrospective glow of the lighting. Every so often a speech, or an unguarded exchange of glances, or a single character, leaps into relief, silhouetted against Alfred's loving gaze. Nostalgia and a craftsman's close attention gild each piece...
...Eastern European capital. Earthquake damage is crudely patched if repaired at all; the public crematorium is a factory where the dead are reduced unceremoniously to convenient size; his wife's childhood home, once a center of culture and comfort, is only a notch above a slum tenement: "Radiators turned cold after breakfast. The faucets went dry at 8 a.m. and did not run again until evening. The bathtub had no stopper. You flushed the toilet with buckets of water...
