...reverse. In an excess of whim and Weltschmerz, he runs through a job in advertising ("I stink, therefore I am"), a stint as a successful TV singer, and on down through door-to-door salesman, street peddler, gardener, handyman and tramp. He winds up living in a run-down tenement, selling canned "fresh air" door to door to help take care of a mumbling mongoloid boy and a drunken mongrel basset hound. One night he gets his head caught in a dog door that he humanely installed for his basset- and casually freezes to death...
...attempts to arrive at a formula for peace have been less than brilliant and often self-defeating. The President of the U.S. has spent an extraordinary amount of time poring over reconnaissance photographs, trying to decide whether a toothpick bridge can be zapped without damage to nearby tenement hovels. The coop, says Miss Walker, 42, a practicing Harlem attorney, is the first Harlem store in which "the community has a vested interest." Cash Rebate. That interest is green as well...
...Step, Out of Date. Baldwin manages his set pieces well: a Harlem church service, the white world's Hollywood movies as seen through black eyes, a ghetto tenement flat on Saturday night. But the heterosexual love scenes are dry, joyless and dread-inducing, while some of the writing plays with trite truisms ("If you are depending on a guy for your life, you don't really much care what color he is"). The penultimate scene, in which the Negro star plays host to Barbara's white old-Kentucky-home family, seems to have been lifted...
