...eminent scholars of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America raise though-provoking questions that would enchant any professor composing an exam on the Carroll Oeuvre. On Alice: "In what sense is Alice funny?," "What poem does the Duchess' song parody?," "How have illustrators other than Tenniel approached Alice?." On Carroll: "How can he be considered a Pre-Raphaelite?," "Why did he adopt a pseudonym?" and, predictably, "What about all those pre-pubescent little girls?." Intriguing, as exam essays...

...somewhat raveled play. Anyone who has ever watched Vanya or The Three Sisters and wished against all his better aesthetic judgment that one of the attractive, complicated, inhibited egotists would break out and change his lot, will find his fantasies acted out on stage. Though George-played commandingly by Tenniel Evans-shoots himself, Chekhov provides not one but two sets of happy young lovers at the final curtain. In the last act, the young wife, who has briefly left the old professor, remarks that on returning she feels like the ghostly Commendatore in Don Giovanni. As if by magic...

There is an authority in Sendak's line detail and composition that permits comparison with such illustrators as John Tenniel and Edward Lear. His Grimm pictures draw on a tradition that encompasses not only the lessons of 15th and 16th century engraving but the lyricism of English illustrators of the 1860s. There is even a personal touch. The stocky shapes and inward gaze of some of Sendak's bearded peasants suggest the vanished rural world of Polish Jewry that Sendak's father migrated from early in the century...

...familiar and beloved Alice is here, looking like a slightly tattered Tenniel illustration, and the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts, and the Cheshire Cat-all the fond friends of generations of children. But in this Alice, the prattling antic chums from childhood cast shadows that are dark, deep and unsettling. The shadows invade the characters and dye them in the colors of Freud, and Jung, and Kafka, and Dali, and Antonin Artaud, who conceived the Theater of Cruelty. Innocence has been lost, assuredly, but a revelation has been gained as the audience is taken on a journey through...

...Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Illustrated by Salvador Dali. 150 pages in folio. Maecenas Press-Random House. $375. Questioned about his stature as a painter, Salvador Dali once remarked, "I consider myself a very mediocre painter [but] I'm a better painter than my contemporaries." John Tenniel isn't a contemporary, but the original illustrator of Alice still seems best. Although Dali's Mock Turtle is stupendous, most of the twelve lavish color illustrations and one original color etching are more evocative of Dali than Alice...
