Lewis Carroll sketched pretty well, for an amateur, but he preferred not to illustrate his own books. Instead, he kept a critical eye on Artist John Tenniel. He instructed Tenniel not to give Alice "so much crinoline," and warned that "the White Knight must not 'have whiskers." It bothered him that Tenniel never used a model. "Tenniel vows he no more needs one than I should need a multiplication table to work out a mathematical problem. . . ." But in the end it was Tenniel who made Alice's Wonderland, and the other side of the Looking-Glass, places that...
Predictable Punch conforms to a pattern that most Englishmen have come to consider as much a part of England as fish, chips and the Royal Family. As in the days when Tennyson, Thackeray, George du Maurier, Sir John Tenniel and A. A. Milne were steady contributors, Punch believes in social satire and good clean fun. It rarely gets any sexier than the recent cartoon of a harassed mother rabbit snapping at a big-eared little rabbit: "Well, if you must know, you came out of a hat." Punch has usually avoided divorce, profanity, violence and prone drunks, always relished outrageous...
There are weak spots, even occasional weak stretches; and perhaps the whole thing could have a more truly dreamlike oddness. But with the costumes and sets carefully and beautifully patterned on the Tenniel drawings, and with Richard Addinsell's generally agreeable music, this Alice is no mere theatrical makeshift, but genuine make-believe. Outstanding episodes: The Pool of Tears, the Trial Scene, and Tweedledum & Tweedledee (whose joint recital of The Walrus and the Carpenter is neatly acted out with marionettes). As Alice, Bambi Linn (Oklahoma!, Carousel) has a true childlike charm, a Tenniel look, and a big-eyed, brow...
...know what a Gryphon is, look at the picture)." - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Manhattan collectors last week came upon Lewis Carroll's fantastic Gryphon in all his original scaly glory. Up at auction was the largest group in the U.S. of the great Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice, Through the Looking-Glass and other drawings (collection of the late Bronson Winthrop, onetime law partner of War Secretary Henry L. Stim-son). The Gryphon, as well as the King and Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Mock Turtle, the Frog-Footman, and Alice herself...
...fail. . . . The tangle of the plot is not really disentangled at all; it is merely exorcised; miracles happen whenever Wilde cannot undo one of his knots." London also has a good Peter Pan and an even better Alice in Wonderland, with décor modeled on the famed Tenniel illustrations, and statuesque Dame Sybil Thorndike as the White Queen. Half of London is agog to see Sybil "on wires...
