...heirs of the late great Enrico Caruso were deeply offended by one of the more successful types of U.S. advertising-the tie-in ad. The offending tie-in involved MGM's The Great Caruso, starring Mario Lanza (TIME, Aug. 6), and the Coca-Cola Co., sponsors of Tenor Lanza's U.S. radio show. Caruso's son Enrico Jr., 48,* and 28-year-old Grandsons Enrico and Roberto, were "disgusted" with Coke billboard and poster ads ballyhooing the picture. Not that they had anything in particular against Cokes, explained the younger Enrico, but "we Europeans look upon commercial...

...Carusos' battle was only half won. Still on tap last week was their suit against M-G-M for depicting Tenor Caruso's life without first getting their consent. Says Grandson Enrico, who looks like a small edition of Tenor Lanza: "The picture is full of historical inaccuracies. It gives the impression that Caruso arrived in the U.S. almost an unknown, that America launched him, glorified him and was responsible for his success. The picture denationalizes my grandfather." Besides, added the family's lawyer-although his point was not included in the legal complaint-the heirs regard...

Zinka Milanov has a rich, compelling voice, but she was too big and too awkward for a believable Aida. The really outstanding principal in this production was Mario Del Monaco. His Radames was always exciting. Not only can be act, but also his full-bodied tenor voice (especially in "Celestc Aida" where he hit the fabulous B-flat without a tremor) shows training and power...

Puccini: La Bohème (Licia Albanese, soprano; Jan Peerce, tenor; the NBC Symphony Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini conducting; Victor, 4 sides LP). This recording of the Maestro's 1946 broadcast will make opera fans regretfully aware of how seldom they hear a first-rate performance of Bohème. Toscanini, who conducted the world premiere in 1896, gives it a rare force, clarity and subtlety. The singers are all in fine voice-including amateur Baritone Toscanini, whose hoarse old bawling can be clearly heard accompanying the principals in several passages. Recording: excellent. A new recording of Tosco, (Cetra-Soria...

Verdi: Otello (excerpts) (Ramon Vinay, tenor; Eleanor Steber, soprano; Frank Guarrera, baritone; Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Fausto Cleva conducting; Columbia, 2 sides LP). This anthology includes the best duets and arias of Verdi's best opera. Vinay defends his title as the finest Moor of the day, and Steber makes a pure-voiced Desdemona; Guarrera is not malignant enough to do Iago full justice. Recording: excellent...
