...CARLOS: If any art form would seem at home with tragedy, it would be opera--yet even Verdi wasn't above the altered ending. In his 1867 opera, Don Carlos, a full-throated tale of royal intrigue, the titular tenor is saved from doom by heavenly intervention. In the 1787 Schiller play on which the opera is based, Don Carlos is handed over to the Spanish inquisition--by his own father...

EVERYONE WANTS TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN FROM the online kiddie-porn creeps, but who's going to protect us from the children? At least I assume my harasser was 14 or under, given the tenor of the conversation in the America Online "chat room" I wandered into one afternoon. Typical contributions were typed entries like "Cockle Doodle DOOO" and "Hey Hoo HAAAA," or, as a topic for serious discussion, "What's the craziest drug you ever took?" So when someone we'll call "Demonboy" flashed me an invitation to accompany him into a "private room," I assumed he was just...

...band was brought back for an encore of "Wild Man Moore," an obscure Ellington tune from the Paris Blues Suite which featured tenor Andy Farber in a Paul Gonsalves feature. Marsalis ended the tune by leading the trumpet section offstage followed by trombones and saxes in a second-line march. A five-minute standing ovation brought Marsalis back with pianist Eric Reed for a rendition of Marsalis's best composition of the evening, the ballad "Spanish Yaounde." Another five minutes brought the entire band back for "Across the Track Blues" to close the night...

...been more than 30 years since Carol Burnett appeared on Broadway. What lured her back is this play about plays and players, Moon over Buffalo, by Ken Ludwig. His comedy Lend Me a Tenor was a Broadway hit in 1989 and moved on to a spate of international productions. Like Tenor, Moon over Buffalo is fast and farcical. Burnett veers winningly between squawking moments of indignation and blazing, face-overspilling grins. Bosco veers in another way. He gets to play most of the second act in a state of delirious intoxication, and does a lovely job of conveying the light...

...collection documents the high ambition of Coltrane's work at the time, when he doubled on tenor and soprano sax, tested split tones, wrote his own beautifully complex compositions and experimented with long free-form solos. Also included is a detailed booklet of essays and personal reminiscences. (Maybe too detailed: 'Trane loved cooking oatmeal and hot chocolate, we learn from his cousin Mary, but "didn't like any crust on the white part" of his eggs.) For Coltrane fans the outtakes are a particular revelation--not just for the bits of studio banter (Coltrane and his sidemen are heard laughing...
