...from the cover of his fourth album, you would be forgiven for immediately thinking that the bald head on the cover of Mark Turner's Ballad Sessions belongs to media darling Joshua Redman '91. However, while Redman is known for his fire and exuberance alternating with tender touches, fellow tenor saxophonist Turner's sound is cooler and more brooding. That latter quality certainly shows up on this latest release, an album consisting of ballads that runs the gamut from George and Ira Gershwin to Hoagy Carmichael...

"He was very proficient as an opera singer, singing in churches and choirs, giving recitals--one of the nicest voices I've ever heard, a beautiful tenor," says Lewis. He could also pick out tunes on the guitar--Mansfield recalls a particular fondness for Cornell fight songs. The moderators also allowed for little discussion between the candidates. In particular, the various questions asked by Karen Brown of WNUR detracted significantly from the tenor of the debate and trivialized the issues facing the American people. When Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) suggested in his closing statement that the candidates try a Lincoln-Douglas style debate in January, it was the best idea of the evening...
