...latest to vanish is Li Guanqing, the Shandong province villager. A few minutes after Li spoke to a TIME journalist on the night of Feb. 12, a police car with sirens blazing screeched up to the curb near Li's bedraggled tent. Somebody, it seems, had alerted the cops that a nosy foreigner was asking questions about sensitive matters. The tight security was unsurprising, given an emergency notice circulated to officials by the Ministry of Land and Resources this month that urged: "When signs of petitioners entering Beijing arise, [officials] must mobilize all local channels to engage in dissuasion work...

...Just behind the spot where Li had pitched his tent, at the Supreme Court petition office, a group of some 150 men milled around the entrance. They were not petitioners but officials from various provinces there to pick up any stragglers who had made it to the capital. ...just a store opening, but the festivities taking place behind New York City's Lincoln Center could have rivaled the christening of the new Queen Mary. A giant tent glowed with the image of a logo-laden Louis Vuitton trunk, a beacon for the handbag obsessed. On the ceiling inside, tiny stars shaped like Vuitton's LV logo twinkled above the crowd. Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rudy Giuliani swept in to congratulate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault on his spectacular four-story Fifth Avenue emporium...

...have lots of different types of love: romantic love, love of family, love of friends, love of humanity, love of God, love of country, love of music, love of nature. Though the English language forces them under one sometimes-uncomfortable tent, there’s certainly room for them all. But when a certain type of so-called love starts to foster the opposite, maybe it’s time to come up with a new word. I would urge Perkins and his cronies to stop peddling a brand of love cheaper than the kind you find on those Valentine?...
