Thriving Groups. California's Jesus People, who started the whole movement, are not seen on the streets much any more, but many of the earliest groups still thrive. Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, which has six touring bands, had to put up a tent for the overflow crowds, then an auditorium that holds 2,000. The Tony and Susan Alamo Christian Foundation near Saugus has bought a 160-acre farm, a gas station, a thrift shop and a motel. Kent Philpott s ministry north of San Francisco runs a construction business and several farms, plus...
Current Diaspora. The division of the Milwaukee Jesus People last year into three new groups illustrates the movement's current diaspora. One group became Jesus People U.S.A., 44 youths who evangelize in Chicago's counterculture areas. Sixty others joined a tent revival called Christ Is the Answer, which, with 200 youths aboard, is now working the Midwest. The third Milwaukee segment, which numbers 70, toured Europe, then landed in a dilapidated house in South London and called itself the Jesus Family. If Dayan were to defect from Labor or even withdraw from the campaign in silence, the party would stand to lose eight to ten seats and might even be toppled from power...
...Dday, the sky over the tent city of Camp Wilson, a simulated carrier just off the coast of Argos, was full of HueyCobra gunships, troop-carrying Chinooks and A-6 Intruders making thrusts at the invisible "aggressor" force. The first wave of the attack consisted of reservists from New England, Ohio and New York-most of whom viewed the task mainly as an extra day in the sun. Bedraggled and blear-eyed, they ambled off belching LVTs to the consternation of whitebanded "umpires" who frantically waved yellow flags to simulate a mortar and grenade attack...
...Eastern's Mexico City Silver Sleeper when the DC-3 crashed as it approached Atlanta. Rickenbacker was badly injured. In the hospital, he heard the radio voice of Walter Winchell announce that he was dying. "I began to fight," Rickenbacker recalled later. "They had me under an oxygen tent. I tore it apart and picked up a pitcher. I heaved it at the radio and scored a direct hit. The radio fell apart and Winchell's voice stopped. Then I got well...
