Last week's vague declaration of help was not exactly cause for celebration--either in Monrovia or at the U.N. "I don't trust the news anymore. I want to see action on the ground," says Ernest Diallo, 35, who is living in a tent camp housing 25,000 war refugees inside the U.S. embassy's residential compound. "We are hearing news every day that 'they are coming, they are coming,' but we keep dying." Said a U.N. official of the U.S. statement: "It's reasonably welcome, but it's not the same thing as a military commitment...
Zhang, who holds a Ph.D. in physics from M.I.T., sees parallels between his recent attempt to scale Everest and his near death business experience: "The temperature was subzero, with winds threatening to blow my tent over, and I was constantly out of breath. But as bad as it was, I'd sooner do it all again than repeat what I went through after the bubble burst." Is he out to climb more mountains? Sometimes the older members learn new tricks too. "Our grandson Grant [Pollock], now 13, knew how to pitch a tent, and we didn't," says Richard Hansen, 75, who with wife Shirley attended the Hulbert Outdoor Center's Elderhostel canoeing program last year. "He was also the captain of the canoe. He taught us how to do things, and we weren't always the fastest learners. But the experience...
...deal this is, imagine Eminem, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and 40 more of pop's hottest acts gathering in an Alpine village to chew the fat, hang out and occasionally perform together - for no fees and no charitable cause - under a tent with a seating capacity of just 1,750. It could only happen in a pop-music fan's wildest dreams. But this week lovers of classical music will see their equivalent fantasy come true. Until Aug. 3, the world's best classical musicians and singers will gather in the Swiss mountain village of Verbier...
