...watchable. All her effort is ultimately futile: A Price Above Rubies is not only an example of dull storytelling but also of offensive and exasperating, preachy filmmaking. Sonya wants to discover true, "burning" passion. The filmmakers make it obvious that true love cannot be found in her community--a tenuous, seemingly-offensive position. When Sonya is expelled by the community, we feel more relief than sadness. --Soman S. Chainani...

...procedure of liberalism is lawlessness. Liberals have no patience for democratic processes and political persuasion; after all, the people voted for Reagan--twice! So liberals do not condescend to build national political and legislative majorities. That approach is too tenuous since the people might not accept the putative wisdom of liberalism. The tune refers to the pain of endings, finishing by repeating the refrain, "It hurts to say it's over/It's sad to say it's gone." But this lyrical significance is tenuous at best, and on a CD of melodies, the final musical feeling is far more important than coincidental words of conclusion. The quick ending of "It Hurts" leaves 10 with a lack of satisfying closure. The album ends; it doesn't conclude, leaving the experience of the CD slightly cheapened...

...star faculty from within its ranks, Harvard has fallen prey to the trend in academia toward seeking out what some have called "academostars," cutting-edge scholars who are more or less auctioned off to the highest bidding institutions. In the meantime, Harvard's junior faculty positions are so tenuous that graduate students don't even want to choose these scholars as advisers for fear of their imminent departure...
