Hell Below Zero (Warwick; Columbia) is a hot-weather chiller that strives not so much to entertain the moviegoer as to air-condition him. Thus the scene shifts quickly to the Antarctic Ocean, where Alan Ladd is chasing whales and Joan Tetzel. Unfortunately, he catches the whales first, and though watching blubber slowly being stripped from a whale may be educational, it does not sharpen an appetite for the love scenes...

But he goes on a binge and is exposed to the mature blandishments of Barbara Stanwyck, who gets him involved in a nasty murder. Corey is disbarred and Barbara dies in an auto accident over the convenient Hollywood cliff that has served as the execution block for many an offender...

To the party purists this is treason, and they install an idealistic young convert (John Dall) as Hoederer's secretary, with orders to kill him. While the squeamish secretary is funking the assignment, his wife (Joan Tetzel) falls in love with Hoederer and informs on her husband. The husband finally kills Hoederer in a spasm of jealousy...
