Appleton Chapel was completely filled last night by those who took advantage of the fine evening to hear the Rev. Lyman Abbott preach. Dr. Abbott took as his text, Matthews ix.: 22. The central idea of his sermon was that there is no purification without pain. The Bible, he says, dwells upon the remission of sin, rather than of penalty. Christ was a suffering God, for suffering is not imperfection, but the climax of character.
