...short, Stereolab live was very different than Stereolab in the stereo lab. The band's sound is characteristically everywhere: their records run th aural gamut from fuzzy lounge-lizard pop to gritty reverb rock (and most often are a synth-washed mix of both). Through it all, though, they manage to give you the cold shoulder. Morgane Lhote's Moog must have a special dial for "disaffected": a breath of chilling ennui blows through all their music, a vague sense of world-weary aloofness that has its heart somewhere in songwriter Sadier's low-mixed lyrics...
...sidewalk. It brought out a bad side in me. I'm a nice person, damnit, and for this lady not to recognize me as such, for her to treat me as if I were rude, is just too much. I swear, I could have strangled her right then and th--never mind. As you can see, the rudeness is still hovering about me, so you'd best try to avoid me for the next couple of days, particularly if I'm speeding along on the sidewalk. Just don't call me stupid...
...TH: Well, the stations here are so...you've got your rock station, you've got your R&B stations, you've got your hip-hop stations... I tend not to listen. I don't listen a lot to the radio anyway. I mean, I listen to Radio Three at home, which is a classical music station, because if you spend all your life making loud rock music, you get home and you want something a bit easier on your ears...
...TH: It's not very good at the moment, British radio. I'm seriously thinking that we could start a pirate radio station that's going to play across the board, from punk to techno to dub, but just underground music, because most stations in the U.K., they have advertising, so they have to find a mainstream audience, to sell adverts. [BBC] Radio One, evening-time, is bearable... you know John Peel? He's probably the most famous radio DJ in the U.K. He's always interesting, but I don't really listen to the radio or watch...
