Over the past half century Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, has built up an extraordinary reputation as one of the most active centers of ancient Greek study in the country. The prime stimulus was Miss Mabel Whiteside, who functioned as a local Thalia, Melpomene and Terpsichore rolled into one. She had her students of Greek put on some 40 productions of Greek drama in the original language. In the spring of 1954, she fittingly climaxed 50 years of teaching at Randolph-Macon by presenting, not one more Greek play, but three--Aeschylus' trilogy The Oresteia, the mighty...
...favorite temple of culture. Its sole accomplishment was that seven or eight of the twenty-five films shown were good, or better. By showing eight good pictures in a week and a half, the Festival neatly satisfied the requirements of a neighborhood repertory art house, like New York's Thalia and New Yorker Theatres. Honolulu police rounded up five suspects, and although Thalia at first doubted that she could recognize her attackers, she soon identified all five. In fact, the author notes, her memory improved steadily as the time approached for the trial. Even so, the prosecution's case was weak. The suspects' alibis pretty much ruled them out as Thalia's assailants, and after 97 hours of deliberation, the jury pronounced itself unable to agree on a verdict...
...Damn Right." The original rape case was never retried. In 1934, the Massies were divorced, and each married again. After two suicide attempts and stays in several sanatoriums, Thalia died in 1963 of an overdose of barbiturates...
