After Katrina, you challenged Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu about what officials were doing. Did you step over the line? I don't think I did. I'd been on Larry King several nights that week, hearing politicians thank one another and talk about how this was an unpredictable and unprecedented disaster. And you know what? It might have been unprecedented, but it was certainly predicted. There was a lot of anger out there. People were desperate for answers. The least our elected representatives can do is try to provide those answers...

Like his predecessors, he's at the President's elbow with a Sharpie pen for autographs. But sharing Bush's love for streamlined systems, he also developed a faster thank-you-note process. Gottesman collects artifacts for a future presidential library, down to the whistles Bush blows to start the White House Easter Egg Roll. Since it's hard for the President to receive mail, Gottesman takes to work the catalogs he receives at home so that when the two have downtime on Air Force One, the President can choose running shoes and fishing gear, which Gottesman then orders online...

...Thank you for your story "In the Line of Fire" [May 29], on how the Dixie Chicks are sticking by their political principles. In a day and age when too many people do the easy thing rather than the right thing, I am glad these women haven't backed down but have become stronger. I love their music. Although their songs are personal, they speak to a broad audience. I hope the Chicks keep singing, playing, writing and staying true to themselves...

...thank the Dixie Chicks for bravely stating what so many of us are afraid to say for fear of being branded as unpatriotic. I am a 71-year-old American, a veteran and former teacher of U.S. history. I am ashamed of what the President has done to this country and our standing in the world. I am extremely disappointed in the Democratic Party for failing to stand up to President Bush when doing so would have made a difference. We are a long way from what this country used to be all about...
