...anyone harbored any doubts that??hybrid cars are hot, last week the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show put them to rest. Carmakers practically ran over one another promoting their versions in attempts to catch up with Honda and Toyota, the technology's pioneers. Companies such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mazda, Mitsubishi, GM, Volkswagen and Porsche showed new models or talked about plans to sell them by the end of the decade at the latest. On display were not only regular hybrids, the kind powered by gasoline engines mated to electric motors, but also variations adding hydrogen...
Among the rarest honors that??President Bush bestows is induction into the Hundred Degree Club. Its members are the aides who have managed to keep up with him running a dusty three-mile course at his Crawford, Texas, ranch when the temperature is above 100°. It's certainly one way to get to know someone's heart, or at least his heart rate. Harriet Miers, 60, Bush's former personal lawyer, then loyal White House aide, was one of the few women to spend time clearing cedar with Bush on the ranch and pacing him on his runs, and over...
...absurd that??New York Times reporter Judith Miller was put in jail for refusing to reveal her confidential sources and Rove remains in a job paid for by U.S. taxpayers. It's time for Bush to demonstrate true character and leadership and do as he promised, without parsing the relative legality of Rove's actions, which were at the very least arrogant and unethical. That sort of behavior should not be tolerated by either the President or the American people. We expect better from our public servants, elected or otherwise...
Denial can kill. I believe that??Manji is mistaken, however, in blaming religion for terrorism. A person's actions are decided and forged in reality, not religion. Islam is not to blame. While religion is a powerful force, it is not the reason that terrorism exists. The terrorists are trying to protect their culture, land and dignity in an unreasonable, extreme way. Manji asks Muslims to "own up" to the negative ideas that radicals find in the Koran. But that does nothing to rectify the situation or change the system. Change is needed--not just personal change but social change...
Columnist Joe Klein noted that??President Bush has changed his emphasis from semiprivatization of Social Security to the solvency of the system [June 20]. But that is only because the Democrats have consistently pointed out that solvency is the real issue. Although the President has confounded the rest of the populace with his smoke-and-mirrors show on a range of other issues, Americans have so far refused to be misled on Social Security...
