...appears that president Bush, the??self-described "decider," has elected to ignore the well-respected, bipartisan Iraq Study Group, which recommended the drawdown of American troops from combat in Iraq. He is also ignoring 80% of the American people, who want him to bring the troops home. He has decided to do just the opposite, with a "surge" in troops, which is just spin for escalation. We tried that in the Vietnam War, which ended only when the American people finally woke up and demanded a halt. We must do the same now with this Iraq fiasco because...

...title of your article on the??aspirations of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney--"Can a Mormon Be President?" [Dec. 4]--is a telling indictment of our current political culture. Our nation's Founding Fathers drew up a Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion. It made us the envy of the world, and it is one of the reasons we have become a great nation. It's easy for him to do, since most of the people sneaking into our country illegally aren't vying to pen pieces for TIME for a fraction of Poniewozik's salary. But American citizens and legal immigrants who face unemployment as a result of weak border security can't afford to be so glib. BOB HEANEY New York City...

Female religious orders are not the??only sectors of the Roman Catholic Church undergoing a trend toward orthodoxy. There is a small but rapidly growing minority of priests in this country who wear the traditional habit of a Catholic priest: the cassock, a long black robe. Two orders that do this are the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter and the Institute of Christ the King. Both orders have steadily increasing membership. The Priestly Fraternity cannot build rooms in its seminary quickly enough to house the number of young men who want to become a priest. Both orders say the traditional...
