...Given Rights. Medical College Hospital and Charleston County Hospital have remained open, but the community is cruelly split over the issue. Volunteers, both black and white, are helping to keep the hospitals going. The city's newspapers have editorialized against the strikers, accusing them of "playing the racism theme" and being "the victims of professional agitators"-an allusion to support from the New York-based Local 1199, Drug and Hospital Employees Union. Almost submerged is the far more relevant question of how to cope with stoppages by public employees in institutions affecting the public welfare. To Dr. William McCord...
...Augustinians did not last long. Discipline interfered with his dedication to scholarship, and he eventually was dispensed from monastic rules. His central concern, apart from classical learning, was the true meaning of the Christian life. A follower of Christ, Erasmus thought, ought to be a spiritual soldier-a theme he explored in one of his first popular books, a volume that he dedicated hopefully to a sybaritic armaments manufacturer. His Enchiridion Militis Christian! (The Handbook, or "Dagger," of the Christian Soldier) failed to convert the man to a more virtuous life, but it did become a stimulus to Christian liberal...
...Gleam is a stately, classical sinfonietta that can be read-rather like a simplified musical score-from top to bottom. It opens with a four-note theme of palest yellows made of three narrow stripes and followed by a wider one-much like the "V for Victory" opening of Beethoven's Fifth. However, Noland's sprightlier pastorale modulates into a green andante, followed by an adagio of cornsilk white, a reprise of mint, and a coda built around a bland band of airy, spring-sky blue...
...status of instructors, if they are henceforth appointed outside its ranks and without regard to its initiative. NO more has it any business legislating about scholarship funds without knowing what students under other FAculties might expect if ROTC stipends were withdrawn. But what bothers me most is the underlying theme of the entire resolution, a desire to go on record against all things military, unaccompanied by rational evaluation of the effects of such action on a large number of non-military people, upon vast questions of foreign policy (which effect I could suppose to be just about nil), and upon...
Brainwashing, especially in the wake of the Pueblo experience, remains a timely subject. And Braddon's theme-that the personality with the surest sense of itself is most likely to survive-is persuasive enough. But in much the same way, the novel that best succeeds is the novel that best knows itself. Unfortunately, the author has tried to set what is essentially a muted memoir in a superstructure of futuristic wartime drama. Braddon's you-are-what-you-remember message would have had more power if presented with less literary artifice...
