...acre expanse of Moscow's Red Square. Thousands of paratroops, rangers, sailors and soldiers chorused "Uuuhhh-raaah! Uuuhhh-raaah!" then goose-stepped smartly across the ancient cobblestones outside the Kremlin. Gun salutes echoed around the snow-shrouded, onion-shaped spires of St. Basil's Cathedral. Unmistakably, the theme of the three-hour parade that marked last week's 60th anniversary of the Soviet Revolution was brute strength...
...would drive their ox wagons into a circle to fight off Zulu or Xhosa attackers. Vorster's campaign slogan is the same today as it was in the last election, in 1974: "He made South Africa safe. Keep it that way." That rallying cry, which is also the central theme of Afrikaner history, is one of self-preservation, and it has always worked...
Like its hero, The Honourable Schoolboy is all too obviously imperfect. If the overriding contrast in the Boston Ballet's performance were between a great classic's ethereality and a modern work's affirmation of the senses, there could be no doubt where the Company's own preferences...
...abroad in his first year in office. Yet he had already attended the London summit in May, and here he was preparing to plunge into a grab bag of nations (Brazil, Venezuela, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, India, Iran, France, Poland and Belgium) with little hope of emerging with a common theme or coherent message. The inclusion of Brazil and Iran ruled out an overall emphasis on human rights, and the European portion made it difficult to bill the exercise as a courtesy call on the Third World...
