Church intellectuals with a longer-term view are watching John Paul's approach to doctrine. They are upset over three developments begun under Pope Paul VI that have been continued by John Paul. One is this year's formal Vatican condemnation of writings by French Theologian Jacques Pohier on grounds that among other "evident errors," he denied the bodily resurrection of Christ. The Vatican is also quietly investigating iconoclastic Dutch Theologian Edward Schilebeeckx. The new "apostolic constitution" intended to reaffirm controls over faculties that grant degrees under Vatican authority, is also troubling. This last decree affects departments...

...sermon on the Washington Mall sent shock waves through America's politically powerful Pro-Choice movement, which espouses total freedom to abort. But even among relatively liberal Catholics there is negligible backing for abortion on demand. ...David Tracy, theologian, University of Chicago: American Catholicism, like American society in general, is pluralistic. This means there's conflict, a sort of family quarrel going on. What you see in the crowds that greet the Pope is a kind of affirmation of this pluralism and of a current resurgence of pride in Catholic identity. I am in very great admiration of this Pope. He's a believable person, a good priest, a good Pope. At the same time I am troubled by stands he seems to take. I am also troubled by the Vatican document this year...
