Such performances have turned Enrico Berlinguer into Italy's new political star (and according to one survey, also its most sexy, in the view of Italian women). Yet, like his party, the slight. shy, introspective Berlinguer is riddled with typically European paradoxes. He is a thorough Marxist theoretician who has devoted his life to the party since he was a teenager. Yet this leader of the proletariat is customarily addressed by fellow Sardinians on vacation trips home as "Don Enrico" because of the family's prestige. As a Communist and atheist, Berlinguer ought to be a rigorous enemy...

...Ulrike Meinhof had ever read Lenin's diatribes against "the tactics of despair"-meaning violent anarchism, which he saw as the self-defeating actions of "a petty bourgeois driven to frenzy"-she gave little sign of it. As co-leader and theoretician of West Germany's notorious Baader-Meinhof gang of far-left terrorists, she and her henchmen blasted a gory path of bombings, bank robberies and shootouts that continued even after her capture in 1972. Expectations are that Callaghan may nominate Jenkins for presidency of the European Commission when it is Britain's turn to head it next January...

...decades, he enjoyed instructing Westerners in the intricacies of Chinese politics. Recalls Author Theodore H. White, who knew Chou in the 1940s: "The greatest compliment he could pay anyone was to say, 'Aha! At last you're beginning to understand China.'" Unlike Mao, Chou was not a theoretician, but rather a kind of inspired pragmatist?"a builder, not a poet," as his old friend Journalist Edgar Snow put it. Nevertheless, he was a supporter of certain of the doctrines of Mao, especially the Chairman's lifelong campaign to prevent the revolutionary leadership from hardening into a new "revisionist" ruling class...

...backing illicit "nationalism." Thousands of government officials have been purged as suspected troublemakers. In an attempt to ensure an orderly succession, Tito has decreed that his powers will be passed on to a collective leadership consisting of an eight-member presidency which presumably will be headed by Party Theoretician Edvard Kardelj...
