Hungarian Party Theoretician Zoltan Komocsin warned that events in Czechoslovakia have "an anarchistic character," but the biggest storm broke last week when East German Party Ideologist Kurt Hager accused Dubček and his men of "filling the West with the hope that Czechoslovakia will be pulled into the maelstrom of evolution." The remark reflected East German Party Boss Walter Ulbricht's fear that Dubček's government may soon cozy up to West Germany for the sake of more trade and the special hard-money credits it badly needs. The Czechoslovaks were furious...
Modulated Nudes. Today, says one of the new luminal artists, the U.S.'s Preston McClanahan, "light is the language of our time." Greek-born West Germany's Heinz Mack declares: "Physics is the same to me as a tube of oil paint to other painters." Explains M.I.T. Theoretician Gyorgy Kepes, a onetime Moholy-Nagy collaborator: "In everything and everywhere, we are surrounded by the technical factors that produce light, and we are no longer frightened by them...
...essay I find so exciting is Prof. C.L. Barber's "Perfection of the Work," an Erikson-style psycho-analysis of Shakespeare. Thus Manhattan's Union Theological Seminary, the Harvard Divinity School and Jesuit-run St. Louis University were among the dozen institutions that played host to Roger Garaudy, the chief theoretician of the French Communist Party, while he was on a brief U.S. lecture tour this month. Last week officials of the Soviet embassy in Washington went out to Maryland's Woodstock Seminary for an evening of informal discussions with the Jesuit faculty and seminarians, including Father John Courtney Murray...
...sooner does he promulgate a law than a "people's parliament" affixes its rubber stamp to it. But in the new brand of Communism being pushed in Yugoslavia, things are no longer quite so comfortable. Party "guidance," not "commandism," is the order of the day, and top Communist Theoretician Edvard Kardelj not long ago went so far as to emphasize that "it is important that state organs be responsible to those who elect them...
