...Haiphong raids hit two thermal power plants-one barely a mile from the downtown business center, the other 2.1 miles away. Nearly 160 Navy jets took part, swooping off the decks of the attack carriers Kitty Hawk and Ticonderoga to strike at noon and again 4½ hours later. Dumping almost 150 tons of bombs on the plants, the strikes destroyed 80% of their generating capacity-and 12% of the North's total power supply-without losing a single plane. As one pilot said on his return to the Kitty Hawk: "There are no lights tonight in Haiphong...

...high ski jump at full speed is strictly for the experts (last week at Lancaster, Bob Fortin set an unofficial world's jumping record of 67 ft. 7 in.). Says Maine Resort Owner Alan Ordway, who compares the thrills of snowmobiling to riding a good thermal in a glider: "They've set everybody's age back 20 years; a guy of 60 figures that he's got 20 good years left if he can ride one of these things...

...well-earned five-month rest, the squadron left behind a handsome record. In 1,239 sorties, it had destroyed or damaged-among other targets-139 enemy barges and patrol boats, 86 trucks and three key bridges, and had knocked out one of North Viet Nam's most important thermal-power plants. Along the way, the squadron lost only two of its twelve planes. As Mandeville told his squadron when he took over early this year: "We don't need to blow our own horn-the results will show." And so they...

...Michigan and U.S. Geological Survey scientists while they were charting temperature variations in the vicinity of Kilauea, the island's largest volcano crater. In an old B-25 bomber crammed with infra-red scanning equipment, they mapped the volcano's hot spots; then they enlarged their thermal survey by following two great rifts that led from the crater to the sea. Under the shore, and in nearby coastal waters, their infra-red detector revealed just the opposite of what they were searching for: large areas that were not hotter, but as much as 12° cooler, than their...

Infra-Red Sky Lab. One of MRDC's proudest accomplishments thus far is an aerial reconnaissance laboratory, built aboard a Royal Thai Air Force C-47 transport. Equipped with cameras and infra-red sensors, similarly equipped planes have been making thermal maps showing the heat patterns of heavily forested areas in southern Thailand, which is presently plagued by Chinese-led bands of Communist terrorists. Once the normal heat pattern of an area has been established, trained operators of the secret equipment aboard the C-47 can quickly spot any thermal changes on the map - changes that could be caused...
