Edward Teller, one of the inventors of the hydrogen bomb and a champion of thermonuclear deterrent, complains that atomic experience has made Americans Bomb-shy, afraid to consider any rational use of nuclear weapons-worse yet, so fatalistic about nuclear warfare that they cannot bring themselves to build an adequate civilian defense system. It is a questionable complaint; U.S. deaths in a massive nuclear exchange, even in a well-sheltered nation, could approach 40 million-an unfathomable catastrophe for any society. But, in another sense-a sense Teller undoubtedly does not intend-the fatalistic terror about nuclear warfare may indeed...
...recalled, got hung up in a time warp in the original. Franciscus and Heston's girl friend (Linda Harrison) escape from the same simian world where humans are treated as lower animals and stumble onto an underground civilization of humanoid atom-bomb freaks. These thermonuclear trippers are about to launch civilization's last A-bomb against their ape rivals. Worse, they have Charlton Heston stashed in a cage so he cannot thwart their plan. Franciscus and Heston try to fight their way out, but alas, fate and the scriptwriters conspire against them...
...last two world wars. From the 1916 tank evolved the bulldozing tractor. World War II was a veritable cornucopia: the first aerosol bomb, radar, the jet aircraft engine, and the ballistic missiles that, a scant generation later, took man to the moon. And of course that dubious bequest, thermonuclear energy leashed in the Bomb. That weapon redefined war. For the first time, man held in his hands a weapon that could destroy the earth and all living things upon it-a weapon so powerful that human reason would refuse to wield it. So, in any event, goes the argument...
...mainly with two facets of the nuclear problem: the vertical increase of nuclear armaments being built by the major nuclear powers and the horizontal addition of near-nuclear countries who now have the capabilities to build a nuclear weapon and whose entry into the nuclear family could cause wholesale thermonuclear escalation...
This is where our thermonuclear technocracy is taking us. Roszak expresses it brilliantly: under the auspices of objective consciousness...
