...most talented thespian of the group is Playten, whose performance shines. As Judy baby in Part One, her voice really does sound like a 4 year old's. With a nasal intonation, she sings the lullaby "Beauteeful," which is full of such comic lines as "life do your duty and make me a cutie." Most impressive of all is the next number, "Wanna Be A Man," where from phrase to phrase she alternates between her nasal baby voice (Judy baby) and a deeper chest voice (Punch Jr.). Her consistent differentiation between the two throughout the song is remarkable. Not surprisingly...
Just before he is to go on, Pat peeks through a narrow door in the balcony, the veteran thespian appraising his audience. He walks to a holding room across the hall. From downstairs, the music of Pat's rousing fight song, with the refrain "Go, Pat, go!" fills the small room. He pantomimes a softshoe, smiles at his wife and says, "Come on, Shelley, they're playing our song." But Shelley, hugging the wall, resists his overture, and moments later, Pat Buchanan, the old-fashioned footlights throwing dramatic shadows across his face, is onstage declaiming his dark poetry...
From the beginning, we are impressed with Jade's engaging character. Her irreverent witticisms are refreshingly down-to-earth, and her surprisingly low-voiced thespian soliloquies are dramatic, if not wholly sensical. Also, Jade's repeated efforts to appease her aggravatingly stubborn disciplinarian father garner audience sympathy...
