...Ibogaine-scotted nerves on a flatbed truck in 1972. But this primary is greater than William Loeb, who incidentally has gone so far to remove his image of slander-mongerer as to publish Democratic candidates' press releases largely uncut and unedited. The 1976 primary's rhetoric is too thick, fast and furious for Loeb to pin any one candidate down--although it is to Birch Bayh's credit that he's received an editorial blast against his stands on gun control and abortion...

...Enemies. Hua may have emerged as a compromise choice in part because his very lack of visibility made him a man with few enemies. Affable and softspoken, with a thick Hunanese accent, Hua is described by foreign visitors as politically adroit and nondoctrinaire. It helped that he comes from Mao's native province of Hunan, where he spent most of his career as a high regional party official and became an expert in agriculture, which is the backbone of China's economy. Significantly, he went to Peking just after former Defense Minister Lin Piao tried to overthrow...

...understanding we've gained--and the drama lost. Piranesi, in one of his more imaginative moments, etched a smart temple at Tivoli, surrounded by figures in various melodramatic poses, stalking the ruined stairs, lurking behind the columns. One dark figure assumes a Byronic posture in the doorway; the thick stone lintel looms threateningly over him. In Levit's photograph of the spot, crisscrossed by the wires of a restaurant awning, the door assumes its proper proportions and the waiter standing in the doorway (in roughly the same position as Piranesi's mysterious character) looks rather silly. The ruin...

...August 1977. When construction started in 1968, PG&E knew all about the San Andreas fault, 45 miles inland, and the Rinconada fault, some 20 miles away. So its engineers designed the plant to survive a quake registering 6.75 on the Richter scale.* The concrete foundations are 14 ft. thick, for example, and a cross section of the mammoth dome over each reactor would show 3½ ft. of concrete, liberally laced with steel reinforcing rods...
