...reclusive student gropes for a buzzing alarm clock. He pushes the snooze button--which releases a weight, which pulls a pulley, which, through some complicated mechanism, starts the shower, lays out his clothes, pours milk on his cereal and plops his thick black eyeglasses on the bridge of his nose. Does this man reside in Canaday? Leverett Towers? No. If four-eyes lives on campus, he's refined his apparatus to the point that he needn't leave his room because nobody's seen him yet. At the start she lays on the backwoods accent so thick you have to laugh, yet when she pines and pouts for Frank, she gives the character a funny, foot-stamping girlishness. There are some miscalculations. The device of framing the story as a show within a show--introduced by Buffalo Bill--gains nothing, and opening with the big number There's No Business Like Show Business is a needless appetizer. It's not as if Berlin's matchless songs--Doin' What...
...Youth kept scrapbooks of their social lives during the turn of the century--records of parties and club dinners and inordinate activities. They saved: scrolled Hasty Pudding invitations, silk-tasseled dance cards for exclusive parties, gold engraved menus for Porcellian dinners boasting aged port as an aperitif, festooned playbills, thick opera programs and multitudinous cotillion invitations with summons to some of the most prestigious and exclusive clubs and hotels in Boston. William Gibbons Morse, Class...
