Anyhow, though the level of originality in the American art world is bottoming out -- a fact abundantly confirmed by this show -- the risk of actual copycat crime is low. The critic, on seeing this heavily promoted exhibition, might be tempted to practice a few arabesques on its thick skin with the carving knife, but the sheer dumbness of the art itself is a kind of body armor. Shaking Felix's hand is like putting on a tight leather glove. His fingers are short, thick, powerful, with the nails trimmed close. Fingertips are black with polish, calloused, and scuffed like rough-cut pine. The skin is cracked splintered, not just on the tips but down the finger to the palm, He is strong, but not with the manicured muscles of the beauty parlor weight room. His barrer-shaped forearms have been built by forty years of intense, detailed work, banding thick leather to his bidding...

Richardson's movie was hugely successful, winning a Best Picture award at the Oscars and attracting a cult following. And yet, only this past month has it been released on videotape. In the hundreds of dictionary-thick books listing thousands of home videos, and the glut of literature on the relatively new world of the VCR, Tom Jones is a near-perfect piece of art which had been shoved off into some dark corner while cheap comedies go from the studio cutting floor to the movie theaters then to a video store shelf in a mater of days...

...enervating paranoia, I think we should try hard to read each other's remarks at face value and to make it as easy as possible for each other to back off from positions we often never wish to represent. It perplexes me to watch students seem to have a thick skin for the utter neglect some professors and people in power show them and thin skin for the unintended wounds peers who take them seriously cause...
