It doesn't matter: film-making as slick and out-landish as Bava's is quite infectious, and Danger: Diabolik proved one of the few pure pleasures...
...sleeps with a friend (Gunnar Björnstrand) who has become a partisan leader. Jan discovers the couple and becomes a gross caricature of himself. Formerly, he could not even kill a chicken; now he contrives to empty a revolver into the partisan; soon he becomes a thief who has no compunction about shooting a youthful soldier for his boots. The monstrous metamorphosis is Bergman's allusion to the shrunken intellectuals of World War II who could attend gas chambers in the daytime and listen to Wagner at night...
Under the aptly named chief of its Public Security group, William Gunn, Bangor Punta is rapidly becoming the Abercrombie & Fitch of law and order. Fully equipped by the company, a cop could use a Bangor Punta Dominator radarscope to spot a speeder or car thief, signal him to stop with a Dominator siren, pull out a Smith & Wesson .38 and pull on a Lake Erie gas mask, flush his quarry with Lake Erie tear gas, immobilize him with Mace, bring him to with a Stephenson resuscitator, check him for alcohol with a Breathalyzer, and slap on Smith & Wesson handcuffs...
