Police too came under assault. Officer Frank Rossi tried to help a young white woman who was being kicked. "As I tried to reach for my gun, a guy picked up a huge coral rock and slammed it down on my thigh," Rossi said. "They were all kicking me and calling me names. I was down on my back." ...double axel in practice or competition in four years. A shock of bewilderment and concern passed through the arena. For two weeks, the pair and their coaches had harbored their secret: during a practice session in Los Angeles, Randy had pulled a muscle high in his left thigh. The injury slowly improved, but 48 hours before the Olympic short program, he had hurt his leg again and, in addition, injured the flexor muscles in the front part of the groin, impairing his ability to lift his legs. Randy and his doctor tried to repair the damage with physical therapy...

Stark naked, he was striding through the cordite stench with his head held high and his arms swinging. His body shone white in the brilliant light of the flare, except for what appeared to be a glistening crimson sash that ran from one shoulder down one thigh and dripped from his lifted foot...
