Starting halfback Brock Walsh came out of last week's match with a hemorrhaged charlie-horse in his thigh. Getchell put him in heat therapy all this week. At yesterday's scrimmage Walsh was back on the fied, running well...
Everything in Laurent's life seems happily unimportant until he begins to make discoveries that we take quite seriously: his priest-teacher, while lecturing him on masturbation, puts his hands around Laurent's thigh; Laurent jealously discovers that his mother has a lover, and then discovers that his doctor-father doesn't seem to care. ("You have to be a saint in this profession," says the gynecologist, but we suspect he's not about to be canonized.) And when, after being hauled off to a roadhouse-brothel by his brothers, Laurent has a small measure of success with a prostitute...
...novel by Larry McMurtry. The film is, essentially, a two-hour countdown to maturity. A couple of high school football players, Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) and Duane (Jeff Bridges), carom slowly toward responsibility in Anarene. There the primary pastime, as always, is sex. Furtive sex. Tainted sex. Hand-on-the-thigh-in-the-back-seat sex. Nice girls never let boys go "all the way," and nice boys never deflower a virgin. All the townsfolk are decent types, but the featureless landscape and the oven-like days render them insensible. Any diversion suffices; the torturing of a feeble-minded boy soon...
...monstrous red tongue coils sadistically from the label of a new rock LP called Sticky Fingers. On the jacket, the waist-to-thigh portion of a man's jeans has been caught in a moment of rakish nonchalance. In the appropriate place, a working four-inch zipper hangs invitingly. Beneath the zipper lies another waist-to-thigh photograph, this one naked save for a pair of white jockey shorts and bearing the logotype of the noted dispose-all artist, Andy Warhol (see ART). As a record-store attraction, the album is positively too dreadful to ignore...
...Donald Effler, tall, athletic and at 55 one of the country's leading heart surgeons, strode into the operating room. Taking his place among his subordinates, he slit open the pericardium and examined the heart. Another surgeon, meanwhile, opened the patient's thigh and removed a foot-long section of the saphenous vein, one of four major veins that carry blood from the lower limbs to the heart. Effler began rapping out commands like a drill sergeant, initiating the procedure to shut down the patient's heart and turn its functions over to a heart-lung machine...
