...There is such a thing as evocation of the great dead," wrote Columnist Murray Kempton, "and there is also such a thing as the exploitation of corpses. Senator Kennedy seems appallingly far from recognizing the difference." In Salt Lake City, the candidate was actually introduced by a memory-haunted supporter as "the Honorable John F. Kennedy...
...hiked police and firemen's salaries, putting even greater pressure on Stokes to push through a boost in the city income tax from ½% to 1%. Admitting many mistakes since he took office, Stokes nevertheless can now say proudly: "We've come a long, long way. One thing we won't do is allow the status quo to continue...
What draws young people into S.D.S., says Berkeley Sophomore Peter Stone, 20, is a desire to translate their sense of alienation from society into "a political thing." Levin served as pianist and was joined at appropriate moments by violinist Rose Mary Harbison and an excellent pick-up orchestra conducted by John Harbison. By and large the performances were clean, tasteful and controlled, with occasional brilliance...
