...best thing though is that Savage Garden still rocks. "The Animal Song" (previously released on the soundtrack for The Other Sister) is an amazingly entertaining song. Its colorful lyrics and jungle-like drumming makes you want to jump up and prance around like a little kid. The album opens with the title song, which is chock-full of fast beats, dance rhythms and excellent use of electric guitar. (Or, as Jones calls it, "'I Want You" on an adrenaline rush.") ...thrashy, like they're a Metallica tribute band--but the kind of Metallica tribute band that really likes Master of Puppets and other early albums and never got around to cutting their hair and so they can still do that flipping-long-hair-back-after-a-ripping-solo thing, although no one solos tonight. But to be fair, this song at least rocks electrically, if perfunctorily...
...solo, tongue out with Michael Jordan-like abandon, any doubts about what was to be taken seriously and what was a joke were gone. It was all a joke and a good one at that. Dean and Jordan seem to have the same thought in mind while doing their thing: "this is way too much fun, I can't believe they're actually paying me to do it!" Singer Gene seemed to be having an equally good time. When the rest of the band stepped off stage "to take a leak," leaving him to play a lighter-waving ballad...
...still may argue that computers are not the kind of thing we should buy based on how much we like to touch their cases or admire their colorful design. I would probably agree. But adding a little color to our lives, wherever we can find it, adds another little bit of humanity and happiness. And given the amount of time I spend staring at my computer screen (and its beige box) anyway, it would be nice if it felt like a more touchable, more animated friend...
