...Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts '00, herself a minority playwright, warns against assuming that dramatic success can only be found in the dramatic mainstream. "I'm not really sure where I stand on things like color-blind casting. It seems like it all ends up in tokenism. When it comes right down to it, the lack of minority roles isn't going to change unless minority writers and directors create them. I am not so disturbed by having to do my own thing. I don't mind working outside of institutions. How terribly backwards...
...Mask of Zorro have not exactly demonstrated oodles of sensitivity. While Crazy in Alabama has its redeeming qualities and moments of comic relief (provided by a temperamental court judge and a talking head), its non sequitur scene sequence leaves one feeling a bit unsettled, but certain of one thing: tupperware sure keeps its contents fresh...
...think the corporate sponsorship and commercialization are positive things? EK: I think it's a great thing. A great thing. Because that enables the international crews. And you get to see the national team go by, it definitely inspires the younger kids. I coach high school kids, and high school kids see the national team go by, and that's where they want...
...About the race--they started the race back in 1965. HP: Yeah, actually it was a pretty unpretentious beginning. When they did it, I think those people were a little skeptical about the event, because there had never been such an event here in this country. I thing the idea came from a coach who had coached in England where Head races were pretty well established. And people who came to the boat club decided that it would be a fun thing to have a fall race, and took the trouble to organize it. And it happened, and turns...
