That Uncertain Feeling. One way that Goodrich management found to improve performance was to thin out the 18,000 executive, professional and other white-collar personnel by attrition, early retirement and outright firings in Akron. Robert Sausaman, 48, an equipment buyer, recalls that, after 17 years with the company, he was given two weeks' notice and "my bare entitlement" by way of a pension. Robert L. Coon, 56, a staff photographer for 25 years, was given the option of $10,000 in severance pay or a $100-a-month pension. He picked the pension. One executive was offered...

...leather jacket over a maroon-and-blue striped knit T-shirt, and a hemless mini-skirt made from cut-off corduroy jeans. She had a sharp face-rather pronounced cheekbones, triangular eyes, and a smail, sharp nose. Her blondish hair was uniformly short except for one long, very thin braid in back. Miss Atkins, a prosecution witness who hopes to save herself from the gas chamber, claimed that she was present but did not participate in the murders committed by the gang. At least eight members took part in one or another...

Learning Alternatives. The child reaches the threshold of grown-up logic as early as seven and usually by eleven. Before that point, he may think that water becomes "more to drink" when it is poured from a short, squat glass into a tall, thin one with the same capacity. The reason for this stubborn misconception is that the child is paying attention only to static features of his environment, not to transformations. Now, at the age Piaget calls that of "concrete" intellectual activity, the child can deduce that pouring does not change the quantity of the water. He has begun...

...chorcography, or the Charlie Mingus jazz piece she and Wakeen Ray-Riv dance to. As the space their bodies move in changes from blue to orange to hot pink, they become silhouettes of motion in a pulsating frame of sound and color; when the frame constricts to two thin streams of light, they move in a separate frenzy against the darkness. The integration is so smooth that "mixed-media" seems the only natural Medium, and we wonder how we ever enjoyed dance by itself...
