Twenty-five years ago this month, Harvard said no. So did Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia and Williams. I can still see my 18-year-old self standing by the mailbox in stunned disbelief, holding six white envelopes. Six anorexically thin white envelopes. The precise wording of the form letters has been lost to history, but I can still conjure up their face-saving phrases like "many strong candidates" and "very difficult decisions." Reading them one right after another, it seemed like an Ivy League chorus was cheerfully wishing me "the best of luck with your college career." Best of luck...

Jumpers leap headfirst from bridges, cranes and hot-air balloons, from 90 to 300 ft. above the ground, with only a long nylon-cased rubber bungee cord to break their fall. Anchored around the ankles or to a body harness, the wrist-thin cord is long enough to allow a few seconds of free fall before it stretches, dampening the force of the plunge. The jumper sometimes hurtles to within a few feet of the ground before rebounding skyward like a yo-yo as the cord snaps back to its original length...

The weighty aggressiveness of a Sumo wrestler is further underlined by the artist's blocky style. But the painting technique leaves a lot to be desired, with one thin washy layer and no variation in strokes or thickness. COWBOY JUNKIES: THE CAUTION HORSES (RCA). The Junkies are still laying down their special blend of Thorazine country -- slow, dreamy and spiritual -- but the novelty's worn dime-thin. Not so fresh as last year's exemplary debut, but the band still has mystique to burn and mystery to spare. Wait till next year...
