...Times Herald was quick to fire the customary salute: "It takes moral and political courage of a high order to talk in these blunt, realistic terms to people who have been nurtured on the pap of white supremacy." But matched against performance, LeRoy Collins' words were wearing thin. Unlike four other "Confederate" states, i.e., North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas, Florida still has no Negro children in white schools. Collins has proposed no plans to admit them, gradually or otherwise. And, under Collins-approved legislation, Florida schools can be closed down in "emergencies" or any time that the Federal...
...shadow-or the ability to bear children. Since she is married to a more human ruler, she must acquire a shadow or forfeit her husband's life. With the help of a witchlike nurse and surrounded by innumerable magic effects (a sword springing from nowhere, fish conjured from thin air into a frying pan, a chorus of "unborn children"), the empress searches for a likely shadow and nearly gets it from the wife of a good and simple-minded dyer. Eventually all dissolves, amid some first-rate Hofmannsthal poetry, into a mirage of symbolism about human and superhuman life...
...been riding in a satellite is in some ways harder, in other ways easier. A satellite has to move faster than an ICBM and therefore must dissipate more energy before it can enter dense low-altitude air without burning up. But it has the advantage of skimming the thin top of the atmosphere instead of plunging into it at a steep angle. Theoretically, it can be made to approach the atmosphere gradually in a gentle spiral. The skin will get hot, but if it is made of heat-resistant metal, it may not soften, and proper insulation may keep...
...perhaps not quite sheer enough in itself. It has been attractively fairy-tailored: imaginative Oliver Smith sets, chic Miles White costumes, pretty Vernon Duke background music. And Anouilh has given it good writing enough, and elegant mannerism enough, of its own. But at times the play seems merely thin where it should be diaphanous, merely slight where it ought to be airy. Perhaps it needs a born pastry cook like Molnar, with his delicately browned, bite-sized ironies and his lightly philosophic macaroons. Perhaps it needs a more pervasive verve. Perhaps it only needs a wicked fairy, or a fuming...
...Wallace Woodworth conducting, opened with the full chorus singing Hassler's Cantate Domino from Sacri Concentus. For such a large group, the girls appeared excellently drilled. The Choral Society did not fare so well for most of the remainder of the evening, the Sopranos in particular being somewhat thin and ofttimes shrill. The group sang Mabel Daniels' new Carol of a Rose. The selection, with words from a fifteenth century Flemish poem, was quite unexciting. The highpoint of the Choral Society's performance was a full and lively rendition of Schubert's Valses Nobles, Op. 77. The first sopranos maintained...
