...wealthier, and they like to own things," he says. "The demand for quality music is strong." In search of more than a niche market, some organizers have broadened out their offerings. "Jazz festivals these days aren't as much about jazz as they are about quality music," says Fritz Thom, whose Vienna Jazz Festival (June 23-July 13) first took root when pianist Keith Jarrett played the Staatsoper in 1991. "We're an urban festival, and we need a broad spectrum, from mainstream to avant garde," says Thom, whose offerings this year include pianist Chick Corea and New Orleans legend...
Rock is used to front men like Bono (who wants to throw his arms around the world) and Mick Jagger (who wants to throw his legs around the world). But Radiohead's lead singer, Thom Yorke, would just like the world to behave. His best songs--Fake Plastic Trees, Let Down, Pyramid Song--are written from the perspective of a perfectly rational person who thinks the rest of the world has gone nuts. As rock mantras go, this has all the sex appeal of "Get off my lawn!" But millions have been moved to heights of ecstasy by Radiohead...

"The parts of the record I really respond to," says guitarist Greenwood, "are the sound of Thom shrugging his shoulders and saying, 'I'm gonna go home and look after my family and make sure I've got enough food for my family when it all kicks off.'" And then there's Selway: "It's a warm record. And there's a lot more warmth between the five of us as well...
Flight attendants at Southwest work as many as 150 hours a month, compared with 80 hours at many other airlines, says union president Thom McDaniel. Southwest attendants are required by contract to "make a reasonable effort to tidy the airplane" between flights, a chore that other major airlines pay contractors to do. According to an airline labor expert, senior flight attendants at United get as many as 52 vacation days (compared with 35 days for veterans at Southwest). And they never have to clean up after the passengers...
