...Ever since the foundation of the Republic, 15 years ago last October 10th, the problem of unification has been a thorn in the flesh of patriotic Chinese. China has been divided laterally by the Progressive and Conservative factions, sectionally by rival generals, each with his sphere of influence, his private ambitions, and his protestations of 'loyalty to the Constitution'. Each militarist has made the national chaos an excuse for 'punitive expeditions' against his opponents, while foreign powers have seen in China's disorder a sound reason for declining to treat her as an equal in the family of nations...

Last week a thorn was extracted from the side of Vassar's faculty- compulsory chapel. Even as their contemporaries at Yale, Dartmouth, Amherst, Princeton and elsewhere have protested in these late years of undergraduate self-assertion that religion is a personal matter, so the young ladies on their high hill at Poughkeepsie have stoutly insisted that each should be permitted to save her soul in her own way, and that the community spirit expressed by daily and weekly chapel gatherings could be expressed quite as well by academic convocations for lectures and general discussion. For years the Cottage Farm Bridge and the railroad bridge beside it have been a thorn in the flesh of rowers on the Charles. They form a barrier to be passed only with great caution. Supreme Court at 44. Charles James Fox was a junior lord of admiralty, a thorn in George Ill's side, at 21. William Pitt, Britain's prime minister for 17 years, assumed office at 24, having previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. At 20, Alexander Hamilton was a leading authority on government; at 24, conceived the National Bank. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration...

...purpose this week to speak in superlatives of the cast. They played soundly and steadily through their parts, but they were always in the shadow of madame. The authors had probably willed it so. We should like to mention Mr. Thorn for his excellent bit as madame's chef, gesticulating, grimacing, and rushing foolishly about the stage in the immemorial way of Frenchmen. He was the perfectly fantastic foreigner, thinking orange blossoms and truffles, operas and endives. Peg Entwhistle deserves commendation also, for although she was forced to act the sweet young thing, she came nearer looking the part than...
