Born into poverty in rural Alabama, Thornton Dial, a grade-school dropout, says he has been "making stuff" all his life. As a child, he assembled toys out of odds and ends, and as he grew older, he continued to tinker with scraps of this and that in his spare time when he wasn't working as a carpenter, house painter, cement mixer and ironworker.
