Taylor, 64, is a former World War II fighter pilot who built his tiny, all-metal experimental plane several years ago from a plan by retired Aircraft Designer John Thorp. Music tours are among this year's biggest attractions. Dailey Thorp Travel, a Manhattan agency that handles only musical vacations, has had a 30% increase in bookings over the past year; virtually all of its nine European tours are sold out, even though they are all first class at premium prices. A popular novelty this year is what Dailey Thorp calls the Cultural Blitz Tour, a three-day weekend of cultural events in Europe. ...Uston read Beat the Dealer, a 1962 book by Mathematician Edward Thorp, the "father" of card counting. Uston, a statistics, mathematics and computer buff, was fascinated, and while still serving as a pillar of the West Coast financial establishment, began imagining himself a buckaroo blackjack hero. For six years he worked feverishly to acquire the necessary skills, practicing rigorous memory drills and doing complex statistical calculations.
