LAST Saturday the Freshman Eleven played a game of foot-ball at Andover, against a team from Phillips Academy. During the first three-quarters Phillips had somewhat the advantage, though the Freshman at one time almost succeeded in getting a goal, the ball striking against the cross-piece and bounding back. In the second three-quarters '81 in their turn pressed their opponents; but nothing was gained, and the game ended in a draw. The best players were Eton and Nickerson of the Phillips, and Upham, Morse, and Clark of the Freshman Team. A supper was given to the Freshmen...
...took their places beside a ponderous craft, called the "Barge," which, with its iron keel, outriggers, and inside fixtures, looked more like a Rebel war-ram than a practical rowing-boat. "Ready! Let her go!" and out they march, carrying the heavy boat between them as easily as though it were made of paper. At the word the boat is put in the water, the crew take their oars and get in, while the diminutive coxswain, looking still smaller in contrast with the big fellows around him, takes his seat...
...could have anticipated such a result from casual observation of the two teams before the game. The Tufts men, though perhaps not as heavy as their opponents, were evidently older, and were a wiry set of men. While watching the progress of the game, however, it was easy to see the secret of our success: both sides had some very fine individual players; but the Tufts men did not play well together, while our men did great things by playing well into each other's hands in passing the ball...
First Half. - Tufts had the kick-off, with a slight breeze quartering against them. No real advantage was gained by either side, though there was some brilliant running and kicking. Still, the ball seemed to show some partiality to the region of Tufts' goal. Two touch-downs were claimed by Harvard, but not allowed...
...question futurity alone can solve; but we have a question which we doubt not the editors of the Student can answer : What is "a nine made up of extra material"? A nine containing extra material might either be a nine of overfed men, or (strange and paradoxical though it may seem) it might be a nine with more than nine men in it; but a nine made up of extra material is indeed a wonderful thing. Apres tout, perhaps it only means that the material is extra good...
