...textbooks. That special status has also meant that the work of virtually all current Chinese authors owes a debt of some kind to the stories in the Penguin collection. Jiang Rong readily admits, for example, that Wolf Totem was inspired in part by Lu Xun's writings. And though Zhu Wen denies this kind of link, Lovell, who has translated both writers, argues persuasively that in Zhu's stories of 1990s China we see an "obsession with a heartlessly congested society that seems to have trickled directly down from...
...crew of local workers struggling in the sun to sheath a pipeline with insulation tape. There was a feudal tinge to the scene, but the life of Chen Ming, the Sichuan-born supervisor, is hardly idyllic. He has been in P.N.G. for 18 months, working seven days a week, though he sees little point in holidays "because there's nothing to do here." By the time he finishes paying hefty deductions for his room and board, he makes less than he would at an equivalent job back home. ...CNPC deal, Iraq's first international oil contract in nearly four decades. The British and Chinese companies won the right to drill for 20 years in what is believed to be one of the world's four largest fields with potential reserves of about 65 billion barrels. Though it will earn only $2 a barrel, BP says it aims to keep expenses down by using low-cost Chinese labor and equipment. The group promised Iraq's government that it will nearly triple the field's output from 1 million barrels a day to about 2.8 million barrels...
...Baghdad, Yves-Louis Darricarrère, who heads global exploration and production for the French energy giant Total, told TIME in early November that oil executives all feared being left out of the rush. "Iraq is extremely important for the industry and for world supply," he said. Even though Total dropped its bid in June for one of Iraq's fields, it is now considering several others on offer in a second round of bids, which Iraq's government has scheduled for mid-December; Iraqi oil officials say they expect about 45 companies to compete for 15 fields. Says Darricarr...
...Jesuit High School. U of D has had a strong influence on my life beyond high school. In 2005, as a college graduate and part of the Alumni Volunteer Corps, I returned to the school to donate a year, doing student teaching, coaching and offering help where needed. Even though I have moved on to Chicago for stronger work opportunities, I maintain contact with numerous U of D alums, and I cherish what the school has done for me as a man and as a contributing member of society. Thank you for recognizing such a powerful institution. Justin Westlund, CHICAGO...
