...even, within two days deliberately entered the prescribed neutral zone about the passageway from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. The doctors all this while,--the Allies,--have been on the borders of hysteria. Ultimatums have passed from Britain to Kemal, and, height, of insolence, Kema! has demanded Eastern Thrace. Moreover, the Nationalist leader, accepting the Allied terms, has added the proviso that be shall continue military operations during the proposed conference and that Red Russia, Persia, and Bulgaria be included on the commission...
...affairs hitherto concealed rather carefully. It appears that Montagu, regarding the Moslem element as the dominating force in India, published a few days ago a memorandum of the Indian Government which explained the demands made by the Kaliphat, or Moslem movement; including the restoration to the Turk of Constantinople, Thrace, and Smyrna, and the submission of the holy places of Islam--Jerusalem and Mecca--to the authority of the Sultan. The publication of such demands just before the Near East Conference to discuss Turkey's position was regarded all over England as a grave diplomatic blunder; and the demands themselves...

Here the operations are most important, because, if successful, the Greeks will cut off the Turks from Cilicia in their attempt to join their...
...cast longing eyes at the recent acquisitions of Greece. France--the traditional friend of the Turk--misses the privileges granted to her financiers by the old Turkish government, and is jealous of British influence in the Near East, particularly at Constantinople. The recovery of Turkish territory lost in Thrace and Asia Minor is the aim of both the Sultan's government on the Bosphorus and the Nationalists of Angora, who are capable of initiating no little trouble in the regions under Allied mandate. The pressure toward readjustment is strong: the future career of the French premier may depend much upon...
