German authorities have been dealing with the threat of militant Islamic terrorism since 9/11, when it emerged that three of the hijackers, including the presumed ringleader Mohamed Atta, had been living in the German city of Hamburg. In July 2006, the authorities foiled a plot to plant suitcase bombs on commuter trains in Cologne's main station. The explosives failed to detonate and no one was injured. A Lebanese man, Youssef Mohammed el-Hajdib, was convicted in Dec. 2008 of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison for the failed attack. A year earlier, another Lebanese man, Jihad Hamad...
...done without a spectacular performance. Harvard started off the game with low intensity, though it picked up throughout the game. Barton-Kettleborough had a big showing, finding the back of the net four times as the Crimson cruised to an easy victory. The hosts never posed much of a threat, which lulled Harvard into a lackluster pace, but the Crimson managed to post a strong offensive output and attone for Saturday’s defeats.BROWN 8, HARVARD 7 (OT)After losing to No. 15 Hartwick, the Crimson showed resilience against another highly-ranked opponent. ...Obama should not stop there. The memos justify abusive interrogations by the completely discredited "ticking time-bomb" defense - that if we don't torture a suspect when we know there is an imminent threat, we stand to lose many, many American lives. But what ticking bomb? In one memo it states that it was thanks to waterboarding 9/11's mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (who was, according to the memo, subjected to the procedure 183 times) that we learned about a "Second Wave" of attacks. There has been little heard since about the "Second Wave," so without more documents declassified...
...underlying message to Justice being that unless it approves the abusive interrogation techniques, the deaths of thousands of Americans will be on its head. Someone objective needs to take a close look at the exact wording of the "chatter", and tell the President whether there really was an imminent threat. The complete raw interrogation reports should also be reviewed by the same commission to compare it to follow-up investigations, in particular leads generated inside the United States. We cannot take anyone's word for it that the interrogations saved lives; someone objective needs to take a good hard look...
Russia's declaration last week that its counterterrorist operation in Chechnya is over effectively brings down the curtain on a war that began in 1999. The news is being feted in Russia and Chechnya as a victory over the terrorist threat of separatist rebels in the North Caucasus republic. "We have eradicated the threat of international terrorism and extremism, and defended the integrity of Russia," said Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya's Moscow-backed president...
