...hundreds of foreign and local lives over the past eight years. Just weeks before Obama was due in Indonesia, police shot dead at an Internet café outside Jakarta a man believed to have orchestrated the 2002 bombings of two Bali nightclubs. Indonesia's efforts to counter its terror threat - so far it has had impressive success in netting hundreds of suspected extremists and re-educating youths susceptible to the call of militant clerics - can provide the world lessons on how to excise the cancer of religiously inspired violence from the Islamic faith...
...really struck me - "Washington, which knows that the world remains a dangerous place ..." - and its implication that Europe doesn't know this. Washington didn't even know that the world beyond its borders existed before 9/11. Then it suddenly discovered terrorism and leaped into the lead in fighting this threat. And who happily signed on? Britain, which had been fighting the IRA for ages and who had seen U.S. support for terrorism dry up (some Irish pubs in the U.S. even had IRA collection boxes); Spain, whose fight with ETA was ignored in the U.S.; and Russia, which was finally...
Before the bombing in Oklahoma City, few Americans would have thought that either Miller or her show posed a serious threat to the civic order. Unlike many other American citizens who identify themselves as "patriots" -- an amorphous, far-right populist movement of both armed militias and unarmed groups that harbor a deep distrust of government -- Miller does not spend her weekends running around in camouflage, shooting at imagined enemies. Nor does she buy into every conspiracy theory that crackles along the patriot grapevine, like last week's alert that the Oklahoma catastrophe-which "patriots" suspect involved three bombs...

In other words, it would make Clinton and the Democrats more popular. Kristol's strategy succeeded in 1994, when Republicans won control of the House and Senate - but it failed in 2010, although Republicans, misled by momentary anti-reform polls that mostly reflect public confusion, seem intent on pushing "repeal." It remains likely that Democrats will lose...
...China, for its part, is not just playing hard-to-get on sanctions; it believes that Iran's nuclear program represents no imminent weaponization threat and that a lot more time must be allowed for dialogue in order to bring Tehran into full compliance with its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Despite Clinton's suggestion that Beijing supports the idea of parallel tracks of pressure and diplomacy, Chinese officials have repeatedly warned that sanctions could undermine prospects for a diplomatic solution, and has refused to consider the adoption of new measures at the Security Council. Beijing's opposition...
